Purposeful work and play

Waldorf-playstands

As I potter around the house, Ruby and Max play.

I wash the dishes. They play with their dolls.

I fold the clothes. They unfold playsilks to make doll hammocks.

I sweep the floor. They build a house from the playstands and playsilks.

My purposeful work allows them to deepen into their play.

It allows them to learn through imitation.

I check my email.

Their play stops and within moments they are beside me.

How did they know!

A sweet and simple, yet sometimes frustrating reminder.

They want me to be present.

Mindfully present.

And so, we re-connect and continue through our day.

I always know that as soon as I check my emails that my children will come to me or something will happen (or go wrong) and I need to attend. Play changes when I’m not present with them too. Love this post thank you Kelly.

I love that you paint a picture about being ‘present’ but not always actively involved in play. I love that while you do your work, your children do theirs.

Very sweet. I can relate, my little Miss T is great at independent play, she’s happy to do her own thing as long as I am present and have moments of play to connect with her.
