A Waldorf Winter Festival

Waldorf Lantern Walk

In early Winter our Steiner school celebrated our Winter Festival.

Lanterns

The children, all rugged up, waited patiently while the sun started to set. And as the sun went down the light of the shining lanterns seemed to blossom through the grounds.

Lantern Walk

The children silently walked in procession towards a large grass area where two giant spirals enticed them to twist and turn through. Lanterns of many colours, sizes and styles were held ~ owls, castles and boats to name a few.

A beautiful Winter story of community, unity, friendship and trust was told. With each class having a part to play. And as my son’s class sang their lovely piece my heart swelled.

When the story was all told out, a dance of fire and trust took place. Many a breath was held as they circled with their fire sticks. A mesmerising and powerful dance of trust it was.

Of all the wonderful Waldorf festivals, the Winter Festival is the most beautiful to behold.

Winter Nature Table

We have had every cold going around this Winter.

I normally really love Winter ~ I enjoy making us all cosy, drinking hot chocolate, snuggling under blankets reading, the crisp bracing air… but Winter and I have not been friends this year. It has just been too hard having someone sick nearly every week, let alone more than one.

It is with gladness in my heart that I am noticing the very early signs of Spring… jonquil’s flowering in my garden, early blossom on the occasional tree and the lengthening of the days.

So it seems funny to be sharing our Winter Nature Table now. But I do like to capture and share our changing nature table in this space. I like to be able to look back over the years and see how it has changed.

My Winter fairy door still has pride of place… And our gorgeous majestic King Winter is well at home, next to our sweet little Winter gnome (from a gnome craft swap).

We have a special new picture of the lantern walk as our backdrop from a lovely friend… And on the end, that cheeky Jack Frost sits after playing through the night leaving frost in his wake.

We have been singing a fun little song about Jack Frost at playgroup ~

Little Jacky Frost he nips at our nose (touching our nose)

Little Jacky Frost he nips at our toes (touching our toes)

We go inside and we shut the door (bringing our arms together)

Little Jacky Frost can nip me no more (shaking our index finger)

I hope your Winter has been kinder, Kelly
